27/07/06 - Cape Verde launches tender to build largest road on the archipelago PDF Print E-mail
ImageThe government of Cape Verde is set to launch an international tender for the construction of the archipelago’s largest road, the Fogo Island ring road, a project valued at 3 billion Cape Verdean escudos (US$34.3 million), officials said. The Cape Verdean Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and the Sea, Manuel Inocêncio, said that the tender would be launched and granted in the first half of next year, for the work to begin before September 2007.

Before that, he said, the government would launch a tender to select the engineering office that would design the construction project, within three months.

The tender document for the project includes the rehabilitation and improvement of the entire length of the around 80 kilometers of road, whilst reducing existing sharp bends and steep inclines on the road.

The work will have an execution deadline of 30 months, according to the minister.

According to Inocêncio, the ring road will drive economic development on Fogo Island, particularly in terms of tourism and transport, as well as improving road safety for passengers and cargo.

Financing for the project is in the hands of the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa, and will also receive funding from the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and the Cape Verdean State.
