 The island of Sal will host one leg of the World Windsurfing Championship in February of 2007. An accord in this respect was signed Thursday, December 21 between investment and tourist promotion agency Cabo Verde Investimentos and the Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA). Between February 22 and March 4, the world’s best windsurfers, including US-born Cape Verdean citizen Josh Angulo, will dispute one of the legs of the world windsurfing championship on the island of Sal.
Angulo’s long-standing dream will thus become a reality with the protocol signed Thursday with Cabo Verde Investimentos.
Cape Verdean windsurfers who are not classified on the world ranking will also be able to participate. The event is being organized by Cabo Verde Investimentos with the support of the Sal municipal chamber, TACV Cabo Verde Airlines and the State Youth and Sports Secretariat. Cabo Verde Investimentos president Victor Fidalgo expressed confidence in the success of the event due to the “natural conditions” Cape Verde possesses for the practicing of windsurfing. PWA World Championship director Richard Page also praised Cape Verde’s “excellent natural conditions,” calling them “a major potential.” Josh Angulo has often stated that Ponta Negra, on the island of Sal, is the best beach in the world for windsurfing.
