26/08/06 - Portugal gives more financial aid to Cape Verde

Cape Verde received 36 million Euros from Lisbon in 2005, thus becoming the country that had been most assisted by Portugal, its former colonial power, reliable sources in Praia said.
The aid was part of Portugal`s assistance to the underprivileged countries.

According to a survey carried out by the Global Development Centre (CDG), Portugal released last year about 303 million Euros, the first beneficiaries of which were the Portuguese- Speaking Countries (PALOP).

In the CDG`s development commitment index, Portugal occupies the 16th place, with an overall 4.8-point score, ahead of Spain, France, Italy and Japan, having no more than 3.1 points.

Holland, with 6.6 points, and Denmark, with 6.4 points, occupy first and second places whereas the "governments led by those who talk most about poverty reduction, such as the United States and England, are not far from Portugal in ranking," the sources observes.

The report assesses seven areas of aid -- humanitarian, trade, investment, migration, environment, security and technology.
