The number of tourists visiting Cape Verde during the first half of 2005 grew by 8.6% in comparison to the same period in 2004, according to figures from the National Statistics Institute (INE). Hotels in Cape Verde saw a total of 92,000 guests during the first semester of 2005. March was the busiest month, according to the INE, concentrating 19.6% of all hotel traffic, followed by January, with 18.1%. Sal remains the island attracting the most tourists, with 66.7% of all hotel entries, followed by Santiago, with 15.4% and São Vicente, with 9.7%. Italy, Portugal and Germany are the countries from which the largest portion of hotel guests came, together accounting for 95% of all of the 162,388 nights spent in hotel rooms by foreign tourists in the first half of last year. Tourism has, for several years, been Cape Verde’s main economic activity, and current trends indicate that the sector will continue to expand, considering the numerous projects under way or in planning at the moment.
