The 22nd edition of the Baía das Gatas music festival, set to take place between August 11 and 13, will present a renovated image this year. According to festival commission president José António Lopes, the main news is the asphalting of the road leading from the city of Mindelo to the festival site in Baía das Gatas.
According to José António Lopes, the São Vicente municipal chamber gradually realized that the village of Baía das Gatas has gained little from the music festival that takes place there every summer, and as such has decided to pay greater attention to the locale. Faced with a lack of funds, Lopes told a Semana Online, the strategy was to include funding for the projects in the municipal chamber’s annual activity plan, specifically aimed at financing minor improvements and renovations.

“For example, in 2005 we began the construction of a road that wasn’t completed. Now we’ve finished work on the road, and we’re going to asphalt it. We’re also going to have more containers and latrines (NATO offered the containers and latrines used in the Steadfast Jaguar 2006 military exercise to the municipalities in which they were carried out) and we’re going to continue to work on improving the festival’s ‘living’ conditions,” affirmed Lopes.

The São Vicente municipal chamber also decided to introduce a greater degree of order in the set-up of the food stands at the festival. “We had extraordinary feedback from the business owners who normally use Baía das Gatas to develop their activities. We hope they can also collaborate to make things run as well as possible, but also to increase the flow of the public and improve circulation for firefighters,” says Lopes.
