21/11/07 - 260 Dolphins beached on Boa Vista PDF Print E-mail

Chaves Beach, Boa Vista saw a large scale beaching of over 260 dolphins yesterday.  Locals from the village of Sal Rei rushed to the scene to try and save as many dolphins as possible.  Struggling with the weight of the animals and having no mechanical aids to assist them, the locals managed to successfully save over 50 Dolphins.

Locals divided themselves into 2 teams, one helping beached Dolphins, the other forming a barrier in the water to prevent any more animals from beaching.

During the rescues attempt, one local broke a leg as they were hit by a fantail of one of the dolphins. This is not the first time beachings have happened on Chaves Beach. The reasons why the animals got into problems are unknown, people cited possible reasons of local water currents or possibly submarine activity – but the real reason will probably never be known.

“We did the best we could under the circumstance” said one of the local villagers, “it is distressing to see the animals like this”.
