15/08/06 - Footpaths may be Cape Verde’s new focus for tourism PDF Print E-mail
ImageThe project for protection of the natural resources of Fogo island (PRNF), financed by German cooperation in Cape Verde, Wednesday plans to present a development project for tourist footpaths on the island to the local authorities and tourist operators.
According to a report from Inforpress, the promoters of the PRNF will present a general outline of this project at a seminar Wednesday, which will say that the improvement of existing footpaths would be a great asset for tourism on Fogo Island.

By diversifying what is on offer to tourists some rural areas will also be promoted which otherwise would find it difficult to obtain revenue from tourism, whilst developing concepts such as rural tourism, the project says.

The idea was developed because many tourists who visit Fogo have shown interest in exploring the island, many of whom have extended their stay on this basis.

Those responsible for the PRNF have said that the most attractive paths should be chosen along with those of greatest potential, and that these should be included in a wider-ranging project for developing tourism on Fogo Island.

The general outline of this project will be discussed at a seminar attended by tourism operators, Cape Verdean tourism and environmental authorities, amongst others.

One of the goals set by the PRNF in the short term is the publishing of a tourism guide in Portuguese and German, based on ideas for protecting the island’s natural resources.
