Traditional Cape Verde cobblestones are to be replaced with smooth, transport-friendly asphalt over the coming months, thanks to a new road-building initiative.
Arlindo Rosario, the head of the government institute in Praia, Santiago, told Voice of America that over 2,000 kilometres of road were being asphalted as part of a push to improve the infrastructure of the whole island. Despite money being donated from the World Bank, the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries and the United States among others, the progress up until now has been slow, but the government is keen to speed up the process ahead of the heavy influx of tourists expected in the next 12 months. The news has apparently also been welcomed by local taxi drivers, who commented that the new smooth asphalt roads will save him large amounts of money on car repairs. Source: Adfero |
