08/11/06 - France concentrates cooperative efforts on water and sewage projects PDF Print E-mail
ImageThe French government’s cooperation with Cape Verde will center on the water and sewage infrastructure sectors during the 2006-2011 period. The 45 million-euro financing comes within the context of the Bilateral Partnership Framework Document.

Technical teams from both countries - led by the director of Cape Verde’s International Cooperation Department, António Pedro Alves Lopes, and by French Ambassador in Cape Verde, Bernard Demange - have developed a new cooperation strategy for the “smooth transition” period, during which Cape Verde will graduate to the UN’s group of Developing Countries.

Water and sewage infrastructures have been defined as priority sectors, with a number of transversal areas included as well: democratic governance (secure financial governance, decentralization), development and promotion of the French language, the training of Cape Verdean professionals and the fight against poverty.

The accord was signed on October 30, in Paris, France, by Cape Verde’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Communities, Victor Borges, and by France’s Minister of Cooperation, Development and Francophony, Brigitte Girardin.
