05/05/06 - Cape Verde and IMF negotiate new accord PDF Print E-mail
ImageAn International Monetary Fund delegation headed by Maitland McFarlan arrived in Cape Verde over the weekend to negotiate a new cooperation accord aiming to “consolidate the progress achieved in macro-economic management,” according to the government.

The first work meeting took place Tuesday, May 2, with Finance Minister João Serra. Between now and May 16, work sessions are scheduled with the Minister of Labor, the Minister of the Economy and the Minister of Agriculture. The IMF representatives will also meet with the governor of the Bank of Cape Verde and with authorities at the National Statistics Institute, the Economic Regulation Agency, water and electricity utility Electra and various different financial institutions.

Negotiations for a new accord between Cape Verde and the IMF come following the Facility for Growth and Poverty Reduction program, considered a success by both the government and the international financial institution. As such, the government hopes the IMF will continue to cooperate with the country in the area of macroeconomic and debt management.
