The price of fuel in Cape Verde rose considerably beginning April 27. The new price increases, although expected, ended up surprising consumers, who will see their reflection in almost every sector of the Cape Verdean economy.
The largest single price increase is that of petroleum, which, according to the table publicized by the Economic Regulation Agency (ARE), is 64.44% per liter in comparison to August 2005. At filling stations, the price of super unleaded gasoline rose 9.85%, going from 132 to 145 escudos per liter. The price of gasoil rose by a higher margin, going from 75 to 90 escudos a liter, a 20% increase. Boat gasoil went up 24.81% and is now being sold at 67.50 escudos per liter. The increase in diesel fuel was even more substantial. 180-grade diesel rose 63.58% to be sold at 49.40 escudos a liter, while 380-grade is being sold at 40.70 escudos, a 60.87% increase. 3-kilo butane gas canisters have gone up from 290 to 395 escudos (36.31%), while 6-kilo canisters have gone from 645 to 830 escudos (28.68%), 12-kilo canisters from 1,675 to 1,810 escudos (8.08%), and 55-kilo canisters from 7,370 to 7,950 escudos (7.87%). Gas for industrial consumption rose from 134 to 144.6 per kilo, a 7.91% increase. |
